‘VISUAL’ Carlow
Taylorfest, at VISUAL, is an annual celebration of the Irish contribution to silent cinema, honouring the legacy of William Desmond Taylor, one of Ireland’s most prolific early filmmakers. Imbued with the glamour and sparkle of the 1920s, the festival recalls an era when storytelling unfolded in light, shadow, and gesture.
The Backdrop draws upon the architectural presence of Anglo-Irish houses, evoking spaces that may have shaped Taylor’s earliest sense of home and memory. Raised in Carlow town, he grew up in a Georgian building not unlike those reflected here — interiors and façades that speak of layered histories, quiet grandeur, and the passage of time. In this context, the paintings become both setting and stage: imagined backdrops to lives lived, stories remembered, and identities formed.
