Geraldine O'Riordan

About

Geraldine O'Riordan has fond childhood memories of attending art classes, at what was formerly the Crawford School of Art, now the Crawford Gallery. Geraldine vividly recalls the excitement she felt on entering the building via the main hall, climbing the imposing staircase, and entering the studio. The physicality of the studios themselves enlivened her experience, as their high ceilings and painted grey wainscoting became part of the creative 'flow' she experienced. The resurgence in decorative painting in the 1980s sparked Geraldine's interest in combining artisan skills with artistic sensibility. She ran a successful business that combined art and decorating, culminating in commissions to work on historic buildings, among them Glin Castle, Glenstal Abbey and Castlehyde. As the artistry and quality of Geraldine's work became known, she featured in many publications, such as Sunday Times Homes, Irish House and Homes, and Irish Interiors and Living, as well as an appearance on RTE's About The House. While teaching at the Burren College of Art in 2000, Geraldine's interest in easel painting began, and a short residency at the college allowed this to grow. The artistic satisfaction that Geraldine experienced during a second residency in 2005, inspired her decision to focus on painting as a full-time occupation. Since then, Geraldine has shown her work at six solo exhibitions and several group shows. Stylistically, an appreciation of the Dutch masters such as Vermeer and Metsu is evident through, for example, the use of chiaroscuro. Interior perspectives reflect an admiration of the Danish artist Hammershoi. Technically, the definitive fluctuation between impasto and smooth application of paint is aimed at articulating the converging and diverging elements of the subject.
